I’ve helped a lot of brides plan their wedding hair, and it can change the whole feel of a look. The same dress can seem soft and romantic with loose waves, or really polished with a sleek bun.

Here are 25 wedding hair ideas, grouped by style so you can jump to the one you like best. Pick a few favorites and take photos to your stylist, and you’ve got a great place to start.

Wedding Hair Worn Down

If you love wearing your hair down, start here. These three are all about the waves, and each one has its own look.

1. Soft Waves

A lot of brides choose soft waves when they want wedding hair that feels natural and easy. It’s long hair worn down with a center part and soft, glossy waves.

It’s a nice choice if you want to feel like yourself on your wedding day, and it suits both casual and formal weddings.

I’d ask your stylist what they use to keep the waves in place, since you’ll want them to last through the photos and the dancing.

2. Hollywood Waves

Hollywood waves are the pick when you want a classic, glam look. They’re long, glossy waves worn down with volume at the crown.

It feels a little old Hollywood, so it works well with a dress that has clean lines. I think it looks best at a formal or evening wedding.

This one takes some skill to set, so I’d book your stylist early and do a trial run. That way you can see how much volume you like at the crown before the big day.

3. Sculpted Waves

Another option is sculpted waves, which have a more defined look than loose waves. The hair is pulled back smooth at the top, with defined, sculpted waves down the length.

This works well when you want your hair down but still want it to look neat and finished.

Plus, having the top pulled back helps keep hair out of your face if it’s windy or you’re hugging everyone.

Half-Up Styles

Half-up styles are a good middle ground. Some of your hair is up and away from your face, and the rest flows down.

4. Half-Up

A half-up style is one of my go-to suggestions for wedding hair, especially if you’re not sure what you want. The top section is pulled into a smooth half-ponytail, with long loose waves below.

I’ve found this works with a lot of different dress styles, so it’s a safe choice if you’re still deciding on yours.

Because half of your hair is already out of your face, it’s comfortable to wear through a long day of photos, hugs, and dancing.

5. Smooth Half-Up

Think about a smooth half-up if you like a sleek finish. It’s smooth, straight hair with the top section pulled up into a lifted crown and the rest worn down.

I see this work really well with simple, sleek dresses. It’s also a nice option if you’d rather skip curls and waves.

Bring a photo to your trial so your stylist can see exactly how high you want the crown.

6. Half Ponytail

A half ponytail is a fun twist on the usual half-up. The top section is slicked up into a high ponytail, with long waves flowing down.

It’s a good style to try if you want a little more drama than a regular half-up. I like it for brides who want some height without going all the way up.

One thing I suggest is asking your stylist to keep the slicked-up part really smooth, since that’s what makes this one look polished.

7. Hair Bow

I really like the hair bow for brides who want something playful. It’s long, soft waves with the top section twisted into a bow at the crown.

It’s a sweet pick if you want a bow without wearing a ribbon, since this one is made from your own hair and there’s nothing extra to buy.

Ask for a practice run at your hair trial, since the bow takes some shaping. That’s also the time to decide how big you want it.

8. Fishtail Half-Up

Consider a fishtail half-up if you love braids. The top section is gathered and twisted, then flows into a chunky fishtail braid and long loose waves.

It has a little boho feel, and the chunky braid really shows up in photos. It’s a good fit if you want some detail that still looks relaxed.

I’d show your stylist a photo, since braids can be done a few different ways.

Braided Styles

Braids are great if you like texture and a more relaxed feel. These three all look different, so they’re worth a close look.

9. Boho Braid

For boho wedding hair, I love a thick, voluminous braid with soft curls pulled out for a textured, romantic look.

Boho brides often choose this one for garden and outdoor weddings, and it holds up well if there’s a breeze.

If you’re planning to wear a hair piece or fresh flowers, bring them to your trial so you can see how they look with the braid.

10. Twisted Braid

You could also go with a twisted braid. It’s a voluminous braid with twisted sections and curls pulled out, for a romantic, textured look.

If you love the boho braid, this is a good one to look at next. They have a similar feel, and the twists add a bit of extra detail.

Since this one has a few more steps, I’d ask your stylist how long it’ll take so you can plan your morning timeline.

11. Crown Braid

A crown braid is a sweet choice for a classic look. Braided sections wrap across the crown, with long curls left down.

I like this one for brides who want their hair to feel special without going all the way up. Plus, braids hold their shape well on a long day.

If you’re wearing a veil or a hair piece, think about it before your trial, since the braids sit across the top of your head and you’ll want to know where everything fits.

Wedding Ponytails

A ponytail might sound too casual for wedding hair, but these six are all wedding-ready. They go from loose and tousled to smooth and sleek.

12. Loose Ponytail

I love a loose ponytail for brides who want a relaxed look. It’s a tousled low ponytail with soft waves and face-framing pieces left out.

This works well for casual weddings, or if you don’t want to feel too done up. It’s also comfortable if you’ll be on your feet a lot, since the low ponytail stays out of your way.

Ask your stylist to leave out more or fewer pieces, depending on how soft you want it around your face.

13. Twisted Ponytail

A twisted ponytail adds a little detail to a simple shape. It’s a low ponytail wrapped with twisted sections, with the lengths left loose and wavy.

Your guests will be looking at the back of your head during the ceremony, so it’s worth choosing a style that looks great from behind.

It’s a good in-between if a simple ponytail feels too plain and an updo feels like too much.

14. Wavy Ponytail

Think about a wavy ponytail if you like a smooth top and soft ends. The hair is swept smoothly back into a ponytail wrapped at the base, with soft waves through the length.

I see this work well with a simple dress, and it’s a good fit for a daytime wedding.

Plus, it’s comfortable and easy to move in, so try it out at your trial by turning your head and sitting down.

15. Volume Ponytail

If you want something bigger, a volume ponytail is a fun pick. This one has a teased crown and big, loose curls.

This works well for brides who want to feel a little glam, and it really stands out in photos.

I’d do a trial run so you can see how much volume feels right for you. Ask your stylist how they’ll keep the crown in place too, since you’ll want it to hold through the night.

16. Bubble Ponytail

A bubble ponytail is one of the more unique choices on this list. It’s a sleek low ponytail with sections woven and wrapped to create a bubble effect down the length.

This is great when you want something different from a regular ponytail, and it’s a fun pick for a modern wedding.

Bring a photo to your stylist, since the weaving and wrapping is what makes this look work.

17. Sleek Ponytail

I’ve found a sleek ponytail is a great choice if you like a clean, polished look. The hair is smooth and gathered low at the nape, with soft waves in the tail.

It’s elegant without being fussy, so it’s a good suggestion for brides who prefer to keep things simple.

Plus, it’s easy to keep neat all day, and a smooth style like this is a nice place to add a pretty hair piece if you want one.

Soft & Romantic Updos

These four updos have a looser, softer feel. They’re all pinned up, but each one still has some hair left loose so it doesn’t look stiff.

18. Soft Updo

I love a soft updo for wedding hair that feels romantic but not stiff. It’s a loose updo pinned up at the back, with wispy strands left out around the face.

I’d say this works with almost any dress, and it’s a nice way to show off a pretty neckline.

It’s also a good choice for warm weather, since your hair is off your neck. Ask your stylist to pin it securely, since a loose style still needs to last all day.

19. Twisted Updo

When you want a little more detail, a twisted updo is a good pick. It’s a low updo with twisted sections wrapped together and soft waves falling at the front.

It feels a little fancier than a bun, so it’s a good option if you want an updo that feels special without being over the top.

At your trial, ask for a photo from the front and the side, since the waves at the front are a big part of this look.

20. Loose Chignon

Consider a loose chignon if you want an updo that feels easy and romantic. It’s a soft knot at the nape with loose pieces pulled out for a relaxed, undone finish.

I see this work well for outdoor weddings, since a little wind won’t ruin it.

It’s easy to touch up during the day, too, since nothing needs to be perfect.

21. Messy Bun

A messy bun is more polished than it sounds. This one is a loose, textured low bun with a twisted section and wispy strands falling around the face.

This is great when you want a relaxed look that still feels like wedding hair.

It’s also a good fit for a casual ceremony or a destination wedding, and a few loose pieces by the end of the night won’t matter.

Sleek & Polished Updos

On the other side, these four are smooth, neat, and classic. They’re great if you like a clean, finished look.

22. Low Bun

A low bun is one of the most classic choices for wedding hair. The hair is swept back smooth into a polished, rolled bun at the nape.

It’s a good fit for brides who want a simple, timeless style, and it keeps your hair off your face all day.

It’s easy to dress up with a hair piece or a veil if you’d like one. Plus, it shows off a statement necklace or earrings, since nothing covers them.

23. Sleek Chignon

A lot of brides choose a sleek chignon when they want something elegant and clean. It’s a low chignon with a smooth, sleek finish and a rolled twist across the back.

It’s more interesting than a plain bun, so it’s a nice pick if you want a little detail but still want things simple.

I see this work well for formal ceremonies and evening weddings, where a polished look fits right in. If you can’t decide between this and the low bun, ask your stylist to try both at your trial.

24. Ballerina Bun

One thing I suggest for a tidy look is a ballerina bun. The hair is slicked back smooth and coiled into a neat knot at the nape.

With your face fully on show, your earrings and makeup get all the attention.

I’d ask your stylist to keep the slicked-back part smooth and even, since that’s what makes this one work. Also, everything is tucked into one knot, so it stays put on a long day.

25. French Twist

Last on the list is the French twist, a classic that still looks great today. The hair is rolled into a smooth vertical twist at the back, with one loose strand left out at the face.

That one loose strand is my favorite part. It keeps the twist from feeling too stiff.

For formal wedding hair, I really like this one, since it shows off a pretty neckline or an open back. Plus, it holds its shape well, so you won’t need many touch-ups during the day.

Wrapping It Up

That’s my full list of favorite wedding hair ideas, from loose waves to a classic French twist. You don’t have to decide today, so save the ones you love and bring a few photos to your hair trial.

Which style is your favorite? Let me know in the comments.
