Boys usually know exactly what they want to be for Halloween, and I love that about them. Give a boy a costume idea he’s excited about, and he’ll wear it with total confidence, cape and all.

I put together twenty of my favorite Halloween costumes for boys this year, from five-minute DIY builds to costumes you can put together over a weekend. There’s a mix of superheroes, silly picks, and sweet baby costumes, so you’re sure to find something your son will actually want to put on.

Superhero Costumes

1. Superman

I love this reveal. He wears a button-down shirt and tie that open to show a Superman shirt underneath.

Round glasses, suspenders, and a cape finish the transformation.

2. Batman

This one’s great when Halloween sneaks up on you. A simple mask and a cape cut from black trash bags make up the whole costume.

Worn over black clothes, it comes together in minutes with no sewing required.

Warrior and Tough Guy Costumes

3. Toy Soldier

I love how creative this one is. Dress him in green from head to toe, then build a cardboard base shaped like a toy soldier’s stand.

A plastic rifle and a kneeling pose complete the classic army man look.

4. Viking Warrior

A horned helmet and a yarn beard dyed yellow give this one its look fast.

Add a cardboard shield and axe, and he’s ready for battle.

5. Biker or Rocker Guy

This costume is all about the details. A painted-on goatee, a bandana, and a few temporary tattoos give him a tough, cool look.

It comes together without a full outfit change.

Movie and Book Character Costumes

6. Russell from Up

I love this one for how sweet it is. A scout cap and sash make Russell easy to spot right away.

A small backpack with a flag poking out of the top finishes off his look from the movie Up.

7. Diary of a Wimpy Kid

An oversized cartoon head mask does most of the work here.

Pair it with big paper hands for a look pulled straight from the book’s illustrations.

8. Mango and Brash from InvestiGators

Perfect if you’ve got two kids who want to match.

Cardboard crocodile bodies with toothy headpieces and clawed feet turn them into the crime-solving gator duo from InvestiGators.

Video Game and Pop Culture Costumes for Boys

9. Pac-Man

I love how instantly recognizable this one is. A round yellow costume shaped like the arcade icon gets it started.

Pixel sunglasses and that signature wedge mouth mean nobody has to guess who he is.

10. LEGO Brick

I love how simple this one is. A green block-shaped costume with a stud-topped hat and the LEGO logo on front nails the look.

It’s a costume everyone knows on sight.

11. KFC’s Colonel Sanders

This one always gets a laugh. A white mustache, glasses, and a red-striped apron turn him into the KFC mascot.

Handing him a bucket of chicken to carry is what really sells the joke.

Space, Robot, and Big Imagination Costumes

12. Jetpack Astronaut

I’ve found toddlers especially love this one. A blue jumpsuit is the base, then a cardboard jetpack painted with flames and stars straps on the back.

It has him pretending to blast off all night long.

13. Robot

This is one of my favorite DIY builds. Cardboard, gears, dials, and claw hands build out the classic robot shape.

A personalized name plate on the front makes the whole costume feel one of a kind.

14. Construction Crane

This crane build is one of the most creative ideas on this list. A cardboard crane bucket with a moving arm and hook lets him ride right inside the costume.

Paired with a construction vest, he looks ready to run the job site.

Classic Spooky Costumes

15. Mummy

A mummy costume is a classic for a reason. Bandages wrapped around regular clothes are the base of this one.

A few bloodstains and pale, zombie-style makeup take it from cute to genuinely spooky.

16. Werewolf

I like this one for kids who want something a little scary. A torn shirt with fake fur bursting through gives that mid-transformation look.

Pointed ears finish it off.

Adorable Baby Costumes

17. Scuba Diver

This might be the cutest costume on the whole list. Goggles and flippers set up the scuba look for a baby costume.

The fun part is a DIY oxygen tank with a hose that connects right to his pacifier.

18. Spider

I love this one for babies. Extra stuffed fabric legs attached to the outfit turn him into a spider at a glance.

A beanie with googly eyes stitched on top adds the playful, silly touch.

19. Scarecrow

This is such a sweet, classic choice for a baby. A straw hat and patched overalls make the look.

A little straw tucked into the sleeves and collar finishes it off.

20. Football Player

This one’s simple and always a hit. A jersey and a little eye black under the eyes get the look just right.

Hand him a plush football to carry, and that’s the whole look.

Final Thoughts on Halloween Costumes for Boys

That’s my list of favorite Halloween costumes for boys this year. I love how many directions you can go, from a five-minute trash bag costume to a full cardboard robot with moving parts.

My best advice is to let your son pick the one that gets him the most excited. Boys wear their costumes with so much energy, and that’s really what makes trick-or-treating fun to watch.
