Dressing for a winter wedding is a bit of a puzzle. A good winter wedding guest dress should feel dressed up for the party, but it also has to keep you warm when you step outside for photos.
Here are 20 winter wedding guest outfits, grouped by style so you can jump to the look you like best. I’ve included fabric ideas and what to wear over each one, plus a list of cover-ups at the end, so you’ll know exactly how to handle the cold.
Long-Sleeve Dresses
If staying warm is your top priority, start here. These four have long sleeves and plenty of coverage, so you’re not relying on a coat alone.
1. Draped Column Dress
I love a draped column dress for winter because it looks elegant and still covers you up. It’s a fitted maxi with long sleeves, a ruched bodice and a sheer panel that falls from one shoulder.
It’s made in matte jersey, and stretch crepe works too. The deep brown shade suits winter.
Try nude pumps and gold earrings, with a long camel or cream wool coat on top.
2. Satin High-Neck Gown
Consider a satin high-neck gown if you want a formal look with plenty of coverage. It’s a fitted maxi with a mock neck, gathered cuffs and a soft flare at the hem.
It’s made in liquid satin, and velvet makes it heavier and more formal. Olive is a great seasonal shade, so this makes an easy winter wedding guest dress.
Statement earrings and metallic heels work well with it. Add a tailored wool coat or a faux-fur stole.
3. Lace Column Dress
Think about lace if you want some texture. It’s a fitted midi or maxi with a mock neck, long sleeves and a thin velvet bow belt.
The lace has velvet trim and is lined, which is what you want in winter. Velvet also works in place of the lace.
Add a metallic clutch and statement earrings, then top it with a black or camel coat.
4. Column Gown with Shoulder Sash
I really like this column gown for guests who want a clean shape with one dramatic detail. It’s a fitted maxi with a mock neck and a ruched shoulder with one long, trailing sash.
It’s made in stretch jersey, and crepe works too. Deep plum and full coverage make it a great pick for a winter wedding.
Try metallic pumps and silver earrings, with a cape coat or a wool wrap over the top.
Velvet, Satin and Shimmer Outfits
Winter is a good excuse to wear richer fabrics. These four use velvet, satin and shimmer, and each one feels right for the colder months.
5. Velvet Wrap Dress
A velvet wrap dress is one of my go-to suggestions for winter. It’s a midi or maxi with a plunging V-neck, a knot at the waist and a front slit.
Stretch velvet is the classic winter wedding fabric, and it holds warmth. Satin is a lighter option.
Pair black pumps and gold earrings with a structured coat. If the slit is high, add sheer black tights.
6. Satin Tie-Waist Maxi
Another option is a satin tie-waist maxi. It has long batwing sleeves, a deep V and a sash that falls to the hem, with a relaxed top and a slim skirt.
It’s made in heavy satin, and crepe gives a less shiny finish. The long sleeves and warm ochre shade feel right for winter.
Add rings, strappy metallic heels and a dark wool coat. For formal venues, a thin scarf or lightweight shawl can soften the neckline.
7. Metallic Cowl Gown
For some sparkle, I’d go with a metallic cowl gown. It’s an A-line maxi with a deep cowl neckline, padded shoulders and a flowing skirt.
It’s made in a shimmery metallic knit, and sequin knit works too. The shimmer suits the holiday season, and the sleeves add warmth.
Minimal jewelry and strappy heels are enough, since the fabric already does the work. A black or cream coat goes over it.
8. Draped Batwing Midi
This draped batwing midi is a softer, more relaxed choice. It’s a midi sheath with an asymmetric ruched bodice, three-quarter sleeves and a pencil skirt.
It’s made in a textured jersey with a crushed-velvet look, and satin works too. If you go for a stone or beige shade, check the couple’s palette first, since those colors can read close to bridal.
Wear it with ankle boots or pumps and tights, plus a cuff bracelet and a long coat.
One-Shoulder and Off-Shoulder Dresses
Bare shoulders in winter just mean you need the right layer. Each of these four comes with a coat, wrap or cape to match, and the cover-ups at the end of the post have even more options.
9. One-Shoulder Column Dress
I love a one-shoulder column dress when you want something simple with one standout feature. It’s a column maxi with a draped bodice and a single bloused, cuffed sleeve.
It’s made in fluid jersey, and crepe works too. The dark espresso tone suits winter, and the sleeve gives you some coverage.
Go for a chunky cuff and closed-toe heels instead of sandals. A wrap or cape-style coat covers the bare shoulder.
10. One-Shoulder Peplum Gown
Something else to think about is a one-shoulder peplum gown. It’s a maxi with a defined waist, one wide sleeve and a draped peplum over a gathered skirt.
It’s made in matte jersey, and crepe works too. I usually suggest navy for evening ceremonies, and the single sleeve adds partial coverage.
Drop earrings and pointed heels are a good match. With one shoulder bare, you’ll need a cape or an oversized coat.
11. Off-Shoulder Top and Taffeta Skirt
You could also go with a two-piece. This one pairs a fitted, ruched off-shoulder top with a full maxi skirt that sits at a dropped waist.
The top is jersey and the skirt is taffeta, with satin as an alternative. Long sleeves and dark navy keep it winter-ready. Plus, since they’re separates, you can wear them again.
Try a chunky gold chain and pointed heels with a black wool coat. A shawl helps with the open neckline.
12. Velvet-Knot Midi
Consider the velvet-knot midi if you like a bit of contrast. It’s a fitted midi in matte crepe with a velvet knotted bodice and an off-shoulder neckline.
Satin is another fabric option. The plum shade and the velvet both feel right for winter.
Matching heels and small earrings keep it simple. Add a wrap coat over the bare shoulders.
Cape and Sheer Guest Outfits
Sheer fabrics and capes look light and soft, but they aren’t very warm. Each of these four needs a lining, a layer or a coat to work in winter.
13. Tiered Chiffon Midi
I’ve found a tiered chiffon midi is a great choice when you want something soft. It has a fitted bodice, a high neck, sheer sleeves and a tiered skirt with a waist sash.
It’s crinkle chiffon in a watercolor print, and georgette works too. The wine color and long sleeves help, but chiffon is very light.
Tassel earrings, block heels or ankle boots and opaque tights work well here. A tailored coat adds the warmth the chiffon doesn’t.
14. Mesh Top and Flared Skirt
A mesh top with a flared skirt is another good option. It has a fitted off-shoulder top with a ruched bodice and a sheer, flowing A-line maxi skirt.
It’s made in layered mesh, and chiffon works too. Long sleeves and an earthy color suit winter, but the fabric is sheer, so it needs a lining.
A gold choker and strappy block heels go well with it. Add a structured coat on top.
15. Chiffon Cape Gown
A chiffon cape gown is a good pick if you want some drama. It has a high neck, a long sheer cape sleeve and a fitted waist with a flared, slit skirt.
It’s made in chiffon over crepe, and silk georgette is a lighter option. Teal is a great winter color, and the cape covers your arms but is lightweight.
Small gold studs and nude heels keep the focus on the cape. A wool coat or faux-fur wrap goes over it.
16. Strapless Gown with Cape
Think about a strapless gown with a cape if you want something really dressy. It has a straight skirt with a floral design and a sheer cape over the shoulders.
It’s made in embroidered crepe with a chiffon cape, and the earthy brown works for winter.
Pair it with drop earrings and heeled sandals, and add a heavier coat or shawl, since the cape is light.
Mesh, Feather and Open-Back Dresses
These last four are the statement dresses. Each has one detail that gets noticed, whether that’s feathers, mesh or an open back.
17. Feather-Hem Column
I love how much a feather hem adds to a simple shape. It’s a sleeveless, high-neck column maxi with tiered feather trim at the hem.
The body is crepe with ostrich-feather tiers, and satin works too. The dark color and formal feel suit winter.
Crystal drop earrings and pointed heels pair nicely with it. Add a faux-fur stole or a tuxedo-style coat, since the dress is sleeveless.
18. Mesh Maxi with Feather Cuffs
This mesh maxi with feather cuffs is a great choice if you want a black dress with a twist. It’s a fitted column maxi with a high neck and sheer sleeves that end in feather cuffs.
It’s made in jersey with sheer mesh sleeves, and crepe works too. Long sleeves and black make it a solid winter wedding guest dress.
Minimal silver jewelry and strappy heels let the cuffs stand out. A long wool coat completes the look.
19. Low-Back Cowl Maxi
A low-back cowl maxi works well if you want a surprise from behind. It’s a fitted maxi with long sleeves, a covered front and a deep cowl back with a gold chain detail.
It’s made in soft jersey, and crepe gives it more structure. The warm chocolate shade suits winter.
Wear your hair up to show off the back, with chunky bangles and pointed boots or heels. Layer a long coat for outdoor moments, since the back is open.
20. Off-Shoulder Mesh Maxi
Last on the list is a close-fitting bodycon maxi with a fold-over off-shoulder neckline, ruched sides and long sleeves.
It’s made in stretch mesh over a lining, and jersey gives more opacity. The long sleeves and deep brown suit winter.
Gold hoops and pointed pumps keep the styling simple. Add a long wool coat or faux-fur stole for the open shoulders.
Cover-Ups to Wear Over Your Dress
I’ve listed these from warmest to lightest. The lighter ones still need a coat outdoors, and all of them work especially well over the bare-shoulder, sleeveless and open-back dresses above.
Cropped Faux Fur Jacket
I love how a cropped faux fur jacket keeps you warm and still shows off your waist and neckline. It’s short and boxy, and it’s best for formal and semi-formal winter weddings.
Tweed Cropped Jacket
A tweed cropped jacket is structured and waist-length, so it adds coverage without taking over the dress. It looks polished for both daytime and evening weddings.
Oversized Leather Jacket
Another option is an oversized leather jacket. It’s relaxed and hip-length, and it adds a modern touch and some protection from the wind. I’d keep it for casual and city weddings.
Long Velvet Coat
A long velvet coat is formal and gives you extra coverage, and it can work as part of the outfit itself. It’s a great fit for elegant winter weddings.
Cropped Cable-Knit Sweater
Consider a cropped cable-knit sweater for a more casual look. It’s short and chunky, and it adds a lot of warmth. I see it working best at rustic weddings and informal celebrations.
Oversized Blazer
An oversized blazer is a longline style that adds light warmth and a tailored look. It’s a good match for evening receptions and indoor celebrations.
Faux Fur Bolero
I really like a faux fur bolero for sleeveless and strapless dresses. It’s a short shrug that covers your shoulders and upper arms and leaves most of the dress visible.
Knit Poncho
A knit poncho is loose and draped, and it covers your upper body comfortably. It works well for relaxed winter weddings and outdoor photos.
Faux Fur Stole
You could also go with a faux fur stole. It’s a long wrap you can wear over your shoulders or one arm, and it adds warmth for ceremonies and photos. Just keep in mind it leaves much of your body uncovered.
Beaded Velvet Capelet
A beaded velvet capelet is a short cape that covers your shoulders and adds a decorative, formal touch. It looks best over a simple dress.
