Halloween is my favorite time to get a little crafty. Whether you’re throwing a party or just transforming your space for the season, DIY Halloween decor is such a fun way to go all out without spending a fortune.

I’ve put together 27 ideas that range from quick and simple to full room transformations. There’s something here for every skill level, and most of these use materials you can grab at a craft store or already have at home.

Where to Start with Your DIY Halloween Decor

Creepy Entrance and Door Decor

1. Crime Scene Floor Outline

This is one of my favorites for a murder mystery party or haunted house entrance. Use white masking tape to outline a body shape on the floor, then set out small yellow cardstock tent cards numbered like evidence markers. It’s simple to pull off and looks really dramatic.

Guests stop and stare every single time. That double-take reaction is exactly what good DIY Halloween decor is supposed to do.

2. Bloody Handprint Door Cover

This one transforms your front door instantly. Use frosted plastic sheeting or a printed door cover, then add shadowy hand shapes and red paint splatters so it looks like something is pressing through from the other side.

It looks way more involved than it actually is – and that’s exactly the kind of DIY Halloween decor trick I love. Big impact, minimal effort.

3. Halloween Party Photo Booth Frame

A photo booth frame is such a fun party addition and this one is really easy to make. Cut a large piece of black foam board into a frame shape, decorate it with fake cobwebs and red handprints, and add “Kiss” and “Kill” lettering in pink and red. Back it with a black fringe curtain and you’ve got a complete photo setup.

Guests will use it all night – it’s one of those details that makes a party feel really put together.

4. “Enter at Your Own Risk” Cardboard Sign

This is about as simple as DIY Halloween decor gets, and it really works. Tear up some cardboard pieces and hand-paint “Enter at Your Own Risk” in dripping blood-red letters, then stack the panels for display.

The rough, raw edges add to the unsettling vibe. It’s perfect for a haunted house entrance or a party door.

5. Stranger Things Upside Down Portal

This one is a total showstopper. Build vine-like tendrils from twisted newspaper or wire armatures, cover them in papier-mache or black fabric strips, and paint everything black so they crawl up and across a doorway. It recreates the Upside Down portal look really well.

Add red lighting underneath and it looks genuinely eerie. Fans will absolutely lose it when they walk through.

Party Backdrops and Wall Decor

6. Paper Chain Ghost Shackles

Think classic paper chains, but with a haunted twist. Make loops from black and silver cardstock and paint them to look like heavy metal shackles. Draped from doorways or along walls, they look like something straight out of a ghost story.

This is also a great project to do with kids. They can cut and link the strips while you handle the painting.

7. Bloody Handprint Newspaper Wall

Cover a full wall in overlapping old newspaper pages, then stamp red paint handprints all over it. It creates this chaotic, crime-scene-style backdrop that photographs really well at parties.

The newspaper layer does a lot of the work on its own. Pile on as many handprints as you want – there’s no wrong way to do it.

8. Guest Wanted Poster Wall

This is one of those DIY Halloween decor ideas that gets people talking all night. Print black and white photos of each guest ahead of time, put them on wanted poster templates with fake reward amounts, and border the display with yellow caution tape.

People love finding themselves on the wall. It’s personal, funny, and doubles as a great conversation starter.

9. Stacked Haunted TV Wall

I love this one for the visual impact. Stack printed or cardboard retro TV cutouts in a grid on the wall – some showing static, some with shadowy hand imagery – and drape the whole thing in fake cobwebs against a black fabric backdrop.

It looks really eerie and it works best when you go big with the grid. The more TVs, the better.

10. Black Gauze Backdrop

Sometimes the simplest things work best. Layer multiple panels of black Halloween gauze cloth across a wall, pulling and draping it to create a tattered, organic look. Floor to ceiling, it completely transforms a plain wall.

It also works great as a room divider or photo backdrop. You can find it at most craft and party stores right around Halloween, and it’s really affordable.

11. Zombie Warning Banners

Spray-paint zombie-themed warning messages on large white fabric panels or drop cloths – things like “Fear the Dead, They Bite” or “Infected Area” – and add red handprint splatters. Hang them between trees or along a fence for an outdoor haunted yard.

These hold up well outside and read from a distance. The bigger you go with the lettering, the better the effect.

Table Decorations and Props

12. “HELP” Blood Tablecloth

This one is really striking and takes almost no time. Paint large dripping “HELP” lettering across a plain white tablecloth in red acrylic, then add splatters and drips across the surface. Red on white is always going to look creepy.

White plastic tablecloths are perfect for this because they’re cheap – if you mess one up, just grab another.

13. Zombie Hand Fingers

Grab a cheap plastic Halloween hand, cut the fingers apart, and paint them grey with some shading to make them look like zombie fingers. One plastic hand gives you five individual props to scatter around a whole party.

They’re fun to tuck into unexpected places – a bowl, a flower arrangement, a shelf. That surprise factor is what makes them work.

14. Mini Wooden Gravestones

Cut small gravestone and cross shapes from thin craft wood or balsa, glue on a tab base so they stand upright, and paint them grey or white. They’re the perfect size for table vignettes or a mini cemetery scene.

I love grouping these with some Spanish moss and little candles. They’re simple but they add a lot of atmosphere to a table display.

15. Painted Eyeball Rocks

Paint smooth oval rocks white, then add irises in different colors – green, blue, teal, grey, amber – with a black pupil and a small white highlight dot. Finish with a coat of gloss varnish so they look glassy and realistic.

Arranged on a felt base or cobweb display, they look really unsettling in the best way. These work well on a table, a mantle, or scattered around a porch.

Room Transformations

16. Illuminated Mask Wall Display

Arrange a grid of round black frames or embroidery hoops on a wall, each one holding a plain white face mask lit from behind with LED tea lights. Paint one center mask neon green for contrast and drape dark cheesecloth over the whole display.

The glow coming through the masks looks amazing in a dimly lit room. It also photographs really beautifully.

17. Zombie Quarantine Zone Room

This is a full room transformation and it’s worth the effort. Hang white fabric panels covered in dark handprints and blood splatters as curtains, frame the walls with yellow and black hazard tape, and add printed warning and biohazard signs throughout.

This works really well for a party as a sectioned-off area guests have to “pass through.” The hazard tape alone does a lot of the heavy lifting.

18. Cardboard Coffin Prop

Build a life-size coffin from large cardboard boxes, paint it with brown and black acrylic to look like aged dark wood, and draw plank lines with a black marker. Propped open against a wall, it makes a dramatic room or entryway decoration.

Cardboard is easier to cut and shape than you’d think, and the painted wood grain really sells it. This is one of those DIY Halloween decor pieces that looks expensive but costs almost nothing.

Lighting and Lanterns

19. Stacked Eyeball Lanterns

Stack three large round paper lanterns vertically on a floor stand and paint each one to look like a bloodshot eyeball – different colored irises in green, blue, and orange, with red veins radiating outward. Light them from inside with string lights.

These are such a fun focal point for a party room. The light coming through the paint makes the veins look really vivid.

20. Bat Shadow Mason Jar Lantern

Frost a glass mason jar with spray paint or Mod Podge, stick black bat silhouettes to the outside, and drop in a tea light or LED candle. In a dark room, the bats cast dramatic large shadows on the walls around them.

This is one of my favorite quick DIY Halloween decor projects because it’s so fast and the effect is really cool. Make a cluster in different sizes for even more impact.

21. DIY Black Dripping Candles

Grab black pool noodles – or spray-paint regular ones black – and drizzle hot glue down the sides, then paint the drips black to simulate melting wax. Pop an LED tea light on top and they look like dramatic oversized candles.

Grouped together in varying heights on the floor, they create a really witchy, moody display. The pool noodle shape already looks like a candle before you even add the drips – which makes the whole thing really easy.

22. Glowing Neon Ghost Ceiling Hangers

Drape neon yellow-green tulle over a round balloon or foam ball to make a ghost shape, draw on a face with black marker, and hang them from the ceiling at different heights. Under UV black lights, they glow really intensely.

A row of these in a dark hallway looks genuinely spooky. The UV light is the key – it takes these from cute to creepy really fast.

Handmade Props and Sculptures

23. Severed Head in a Jar

Print a close-up photo of a face, seal it to protect it from moisture, and submerge it in a large glass mason jar filled with green food-coloring tinted water. Top it with an animal skull prop and surround it with extra potion bottles and fake cobwebs.

It’s deeply unsettling in the best way – people can’t stop staring at it. And it costs almost nothing to make.

24. Papier-Mache Bone Prop

Shape crumpled newspaper into a bone structure, tape it to hold the form, then cover it with papier-mache strips and let it dry fully. Once it’s dry, paint it white or grey and scatter it around your haunted scene.

These are surprisingly realistic once painted. Make a whole pile of them – it’s a satisfying project and the materials are basically free.

25. Rustic Wood Warning Signs

Paint weathered wooden planks with spooky messages – “Keep Out,” “Danger,” “Turn Back” – in rough white lettering. Nail or tie them together in a cross-stake formation for yard display.

Reclaimed or distressed wood works best here because it already has that weathered look built in. These hold up well outdoors and are great for a front yard haunted display.

Ceiling and Overhead Decor

26. Black Balloon Arch with Cobwebs

Build a balloon garland arch using all black balloons in varying sizes, run fake cobwebs through the gaps, and finish it with a large black plastic spider at the top. It works beautifully as a party entrance or photo backdrop frame.

Balloon arches look really polished and they’re not as hard to make as they seem. Balloon strip tape makes the whole assembly much easier.

27. Giant Yarn Ceiling Spiderweb

Run white yarn from a central ceiling point out to the walls in a radial pattern, then connect the strands in concentric rings to build a massive spiderweb. Hang large black plastic spiders from the center and let some dangle down on extra threads.

This one takes some patience, but the result is really impressive. It fills a room in a way that no other decoration does – guests always look up when they walk in.

My Amazon Picks

If you want to skip the craft store run, I’ve put together some of my favorite supplies for these projects – think black balloons, LED tea lights, fake cobwebs, and UV black lights.

Everything you need to pull off these DIY Halloween decor ideas without hunting through five different stores.

Where to Start with Your DIY Halloween Decor

There are 27 ideas here, which can feel like a lot – but you don’t have to do all of them. My suggestion is to pick two or three that really excite you and do those well. A few well-executed DIY Halloween decor pieces will always look better than a bunch of rushed ones.

Think about what kind of atmosphere you’re going for – creepy crime scene, zombie apocalypse, classic haunted house – and pick the ideas that fit that vibe. Most of these use inexpensive materials, so don’t be afraid to test something out before committing to it as a centerpiece.

Halloween is supposed to be fun, so enjoy the process. Some of the best decorations come from experimenting and seeing what works. Happy decorating!
