Picking a Halloween costume can turn into more of a project than you meant it to be. I put together a big list of Halloween costumes for men that covers pretty much every mood, from full on horror to something you can throw together in an afternoon.

I split everything into a few categories to make browsing easier. Scroll through and grab whichever one fits your plans this year.

Finding the Halloween Costume That Fits You

Fantasy and Sci-Fi Costumes

1. Jon Snow

I love how simple this one is to put together. All you really need is an all black outfit and a fur trimmed cloak, and you already look like you walked off the set of Game of Thrones.

Add a cross body strap over one shoulder to hold the cloak in place and give it that Night’s Watch feel. Boots and a beard help too, but they are not required.

This is a great pick if you want a costume that reads instantly recognizable without a ton of makeup or props.

2. Sirius Black

This one is perfect if you want a Halloween costume that tells its own story. Wear a tattered robe over a striped prisoner shirt to get that just escaped from Azkaban look.

The detail that really sells it is a handmade sign that says Azkaban Prison. It is a small touch, but it is the kind of thing people notice and remember.

I love this for Harry Potter fans because it is a character you do not see done very often at parties.

3. Avatar Na’vi

If you are up for a costume that takes a little more effort, this one gets a lot of attention. Blue body paint with tiger stripe patterns is the base, and pointed ears finish the look.

Give yourself extra time on makeup for this one. Body paint takes longer to apply and dry than most costumes on this list.

This is one of the most photographed costumes at any party, so it is worth it if you do not mind the prep work.

4. Dune

This one leans into texture more than color. A draped tan hood with layered wrapped fabric gives you that desert survival look straight out of Dune.

Wrap some of the fabric around your arms like bandages for another layer of detail. Neutral tones work best here, think sand and dust rather than bright colors.

I like this for guys who want something that looks put together without being a licensed character costume.

5. Forest Elf

A leather vest draped in vines and leaves is the base for this one, and it works for almost any body type or age.

Pointed prosthetic ears finish the look and make it clear you are going for elf, not just outdoorsman. You can find these ears pretty easily online.

This is a good option if you want something nature themed that still feels a little magical.

Horror and Scary Costumes

6. Freddy Krueger

A tattered red and green striped sweater is really all you need to make this one recognizable. Rough it up a bit with some cuts and fraying for extra effect.

The clawed glove is the piece that pulls the whole costume together. Do not skip it, it is what turns a striped sweater into a Nightmare on Elm Street costume.

This is one of the easiest horror costumes to pull off last minute, since the sweater is the hardest part to find and everything else is simple.

7. Werewolf

This one is all about the makeup. Detailed wolf face makeup with some fur texture and shading does most of the work.

Prosthetic ears and yellow contacts take it to the next level. A simple peasant shirt, torn up a little, is all you need for the rest of the outfit.

I always tell guys this one takes practice, so try the makeup once before the actual night if you can.

8. Chucky

Red curly hair and scarred makeup are the two things that make this costume instantly recognizable. A wig gets you most of the way there.

Pair it with a striped shirt and denim overalls for the classic Child’s Play look. It is a costume most people will recognize the second they see it.

This one works well if you want something a little playful mixed in with the horror.

9. Skull Face Makeup

Detailed skeleton face paint is the whole costume here, and it looks great no matter what you pair it with. A black leather jacket gives it an edgier finish.

This is a good one to practice ahead of time since the details around the eyes and cheekbones take some patience.

I like this for guys who want something classic and a little edgy without dressing as a specific character.

10. Mummy

Full body bandage wrapping in beige is the base for this one. You can use real gauze or cut up fabric strips, whatever you have on hand.

Smudge some dark eye makeup around your eyes to finish it off. It does not take much to get that ancient, worn down look.

This is one of the more budget friendly options on this whole list, since bandage wrap is cheap and easy to find.

11. Dracula

A dramatic red and black high collared cape is what makes this costume instantly readable from across the room.

Pale makeup and a little blood drip detail around your mouth finish the look. It is simple, but it hits every time.

This is a classic for a reason. It works at any party and never feels dated.

12. Bloody Prisoner

An orange jumpsuit that says Jail Bird is the starting point here. You can usually find these pretty easily around Halloween.

Add handcuffs and some blood makeup to push it from funny into a little unsettling. It is an easy costume to adjust depending on how scary you want to go.

This one is great for group costumes too, if a few of you want to go as a matching set of escapees.

13. The Shining Door

This one is more of a prop costume than a traditional outfit. A wooden broken door panel frames your face and recreates that iconic axe scene.

You can build the panel out of cardboard or thin wood and paint it to look weathered. It is a fun option if you like building things.

I love this one for guys who want to stand out with something nobody else will have thought of.

Superhero and Comic Costumes

14. Clark Kent Superman Reveal

This is one of the simplest costumes on this whole list. Wear a button up dress shirt and rip it open to reveal a Superman tee underneath.

Glasses and slicked hair complete the Clark Kent side of things. It is a fun gag costume that gets a laugh every time you do the reveal.

I always suggest this for guys who want something low effort but still fun and interactive at a party.

15. The Joker

White face paint and slicked back green hair are the two pieces that make this one instantly recognizable.

Add some tattoo details with makeup for a more current take on the character. This version skips the traditional purple suit for something a little edgier.

This is a good pick if you want a villain costume that still lets you wear casual clothes underneath the makeup.

16. Batman

A black bat eared cowl is really all you need to sell this one. Wear it over an all black streetwear outfit for a modern, casual take on the character.

This is a nice option if you want a superhero costume without the full suit and cape. It is comfortable enough to wear all night.

I like this version for guys who want something recognizable but still easy to move around in.

17. Ghostbusters

This one is about as simple as costumes get. A handmade felt patch with the no ghost logo pinned to a plain shirt gets the reference across right away.

You can make the patch yourself with felt and a hot glue gun in about twenty minutes. Add a tan jumpsuit if you want to go further.

This is a great last minute option if you are short on time but still want people to get the reference.

Cult Classic Movie and TV Characters

18. Gomez Addams

Slicked back dark hair and a thin mustache go a long way here. Pair them with a pinstripe suit for the classic Addams Family patriarch look.

This is a costume that works well if you are going with a partner dressed as Morticia. It reads as a set even if you are the only one who dressed up.

I love this one for guys who want something a little theatrical without going full horror.

19. American Psycho

A blood splattered white coverall is the base for this one, straight from the film’s iconic kill scene.

Add an axe prop to complete the look. This costume gets a reaction wherever you go, so be ready for people to want a photo.

This is a good pick if you want something with a strong visual impact and do not mind a little bit of a shock factor.

20. Men in Black Agent

A black suit and sunglasses are the foundation here, and most guys already have both in their closet.

An MIB badge and an alien balloon prop take it from generic suit to a costume people will actually recognize. The balloon is a fun, unexpected touch.

This is one of the easier costumes to pull together if you want something that still looks sharp.

21. Walter White

A full yellow hazmat coverall is what makes this one instantly recognizable, straight from the show’s cook scenes.

Add a gas mask with the filter attachment and a biohazard bucket prop to round it out. It is a costume that looks great in photos with a group.

This one works especially well if a few friends want to dress as the whole crew.

22. Peaky Blinders Gangster

A flat cap and a wool overcoat are the two pieces that set this look apart from a regular suit. It is a costume that feels dressed up without trying too hard.

Add a cigarette as a prop for the finishing touch, styled after the show’s signature look. A pocket watch tucked in a vest pocket is a nice extra if you want to go further.

I like this one for guys who want a period costume that is still comfortable to wear all night.

23. Tyler Durden

A red leather jacket is the centerpiece of this one. It is bold enough to stand out without needing much else.

Add some scratched, bruised looking face makeup to complete the Fight Club look. Keep the rest of the outfit simple so the jacket stays the focus.

This is a solid pick if you want an edgy costume that is also genuinely comfortable to wear.

24. Edward Scissorhands

A white shirt and suspenders make up the base of this costume, with makeshift blade scissorhands as the standout detail.

You can build the scissorhands out of cardboard or foam and spray paint them silver. Pale makeup and messy dark hair finish the Tim Burton look.

This one takes a bit more prep than most on this list, but it is worth it for how unique it looks.

Classic and Easy Costumes

25. Devil

Red sequined horns and some smoky red eye makeup are all you really need for this one. It is about as low effort as Halloween costumes for men get.

Wear it with all black or all red clothing depending on how much you want to lean into the look. Either way works.

This is a great backup option if you are short on time or do not want to plan too far ahead.

26. Pirate

A bandana, eye patch, and sash belt turn a regular white shirt into a Captain Jack Sparrow style pirate costume.

Add some boots and a prop sword if you want to go further. This one is easy to build with pieces you probably already own.

This is a good choice if you want something classic that works for guys of any age.

27. Boxer

A satin robe over gym shorts is the base here, with bloodied hand wraps and a black eye to sell the beat up prizefighter look.

This one is comfortable to wear all night, which makes it a good option if you are planning to be out late.

I like this for guys who want a costume with a little bit of a story behind it, like they just walked out of the ring.

28. Cowboy

A suede jacket, bandana, and wide brimmed hat make up the classic western look here. It is simple, comfortable, and always recognizable.

Add boots and a belt buckle if you want to round it out further. This is one of those costumes that never really goes out of style.

This is a solid pick if you want something easy that still looks put together.

29. Where’s Waldo

A red and white striped shirt with a red beanie and round glasses is all it takes to become Waldo for the night.

This one is nostalgic and instantly recognizable, especially at bigger parties where people are looking around for you the whole night.

It is also one of the most budget friendly costumes on this list, since most of the pieces are easy to find or already in your closet.

30. Top Gun Pilot

An olive flight jumpsuit with patches is the base for this one, paired with a classic pair of aviators.

A mustache, real or fake, adds the finishing touch. This costume works well solo or as part of a group with friends dressed as the rest of the squadron.

I love this one because it is comfortable, recognizable, and does not require any makeup at all.

Finding the Halloween Costume That Fits You

With this many Halloween costumes for men to choose from, the hardest part is usually just picking one. I always tell guys to start with how much time and effort you actually want to put in this year. If you want something you can pull together tonight, look at the classic and easy category. If you are up for makeup and a little building, the horror and fantasy options give you a lot more to work with.

Whatever you land on, the best costumes are the ones you actually feel good wearing all night. Pick the one that sounds the most fun to you, not just the one that seems the most impressive, and you will have a good time no matter which list it came from.
