Movie, TV, and Character Costumes

These family Halloween costumes borrow characters straight from favorite movies, shows, and games.

1. Classic Horror Movie Villains

Dad goes as Michael Myers in a gray coverall and pale mask, mom becomes Freddy Krueger in the striped sweater, fedora, and clawed glove, and the toddler dresses as Chucky with red hair and denim overalls.

Pairing scary horror icons with an adorable toddler version of a killer doll makes a cute versus creepy mix that’s always a party favorite. This works well for a family of three, and it’s easy to expand with Jason, Ghostface, or Leatherface.

Thrifted coveralls, a striped sweater, and a cheap fedora cover the main looks. Face paint and a wig do the rest, so you can skip the expensive licensed masks.

2. Coraline Family

Mom dresses as the Other Mother with dark hair, black button eye makeup, and wire spider leg accents. Dad plays Coraline’s father in a red robe and glasses, and the child becomes Coraline in a yellow raincoat, blue wig, and yellow boots.

The eerie Other Mother next to a bright, cheerful Coraline makes a fun creepy cute contrast. This fits a family of three best, though extra kids could dress as the Cat or Wybie.

A polka dot dress, dark wig, and black button makeup cover mom’s look. A yellow raincoat and blue wig are the easiest pieces for the child’s costume, and both are simple to thrift.

3. Despicable Me Family

Kids dress as Minions in yellow overalls and goggles, while the parents become Gru, with his dark clothing and deadpan look, and Lucy Wilde, with orange hair and sunglasses.

A group of identical yellow Minions is instantly recognizable, and the joke gets funnier with more kids. This is one of the best picks for a large family, though it scales down easily too.

Yellow t-shirts, denim overalls, and DIY goggles made from cut plastic cups or pipe cleaners recreate the Minion look without buying costume shop suits.

4. Addams Family

Mom dresses as Morticia Addams in a long black gown with dramatic makeup, dad becomes Gomez Addams in a pinstripe suit with a cigar prop and drawn on mustache, and the baby gets styled to match Gomez’s hair and expression.

The baby mimicking dad’s slicked back hair is the real punchline here. This works well for a family of three, and it’s easy to expand with Wednesday, Pugsley, or Uncle Fester.

A black slip dress and pale makeup cover Morticia. A thrifted pinstripe suit and drawn on mustache work for Gomez, and a little gel in the baby’s hair finishes the joke.

5. Scooby-Doo Gang

Dad dresses as Shaggy in a green shirt, shaggy wig, and brown pants. Mom becomes Velma in an orange sweater, red skirt, and round glasses, and the baby rounds it out as Scooby-Doo in a brown hooded onesie with ears.

This mismatched mystery gang is instantly recognizable, and a baby playing Scooby is an easy scene stealer. It works well for a family of three, with room to add Fred, Daphne, or the Mystery Machine.

A green tee and messy wig make Shaggy simple. An orange turtleneck, red skirt, and round glasses nail Velma’s look, and Scooby onesies are easy to find or DIY with brown fleece.

6. Shrek Family

Dad goes as Shrek with green coloring, ogre ears, and a tunic. Mom dresses as Princess Fiona in a flowing green velvet gown with a braid, and the toddler rounds out the group as Donkey.

This trio is instantly recognizable, and it’s a fun pick for a pregnancy reveal since Fiona is literally growing a little ogre baby. It works best for a family of three, with Puss in Boots or the Gingerbread Man as easy additions.

A bald cap or green beanie with a stuffed shirt makes Shrek simple. A green velvet dress covers Fiona, and gray fleece with felt ears turns any toddler into Donkey.

7. Pokémon Family

Mom dresses as a Team Rocket member with a white R logo shirt and thigh high boots. Dad becomes Ash Ketchum with a red cap and blue vest, and the kids dress as Pikachu and another Pokémon like Eevee, each carrying a Pokéball candy bucket.

Mixing good guy Ash with villain Team Rocket in the same family is a playful nod to the show. This is a great pick for a medium family, and it’s easy to add more kids as new Pokémon.

A plain white tee with an iron on R covers Team Rocket. A red cap and blue vest create Ash’s look cheaply, and Pokémon onesies are widely available online.

8. Mario, Peach, and Toad Baby

Dad dresses as Mario with a red cap, overalls, and a mustache. Mom becomes Princess Peach in a pink gown and crown, and the baby rounds out the group as Toad, with a mushroom cap hood and blue vest.

A baby playing Toad alongside Mario and Peach makes for a cute pairing that any age recognizes. This works well for a small family, with Luigi, Yoshi, or Bowser as easy additions.

Denim overalls, a red shirt, and a red cap with an M make Mario simple. A pink dress and gold crown headband cover Peach, and a mushroom cap hat makes Toad easy to DIY or buy.

9. Star Wars Family

Mom dresses as Princess Leia with a white outfit and the iconic hair buns. Dad becomes Han Solo in a brown leather jacket and black shirt, and the baby dresses as Grogu, wrapped in a brown robe with little green ears.

Pairing classic original trilogy characters with the newer, popular Grogu makes a fun generational mashup. This is a great pick for a small family, and it easily expands with Luke Skywalker or Chewbacca.

A white turtleneck with sock bun hair nails Leia’s look. A brown jacket and black shirt cover Han Solo, and a green and brown hooded onesie makes Grogu simple to buy or DIY.

10. 101 Dalmatians Family (with a Real Dog)

Mom dresses as Cruella de Vil with a half black, half white wig, red gloves, and a fur trimmed coat. Dad plays a dog catcher with a net, the baby becomes a Dalmatian puppy, and a real family dog can wear a matching spotted costume.

Including the family’s actual dog adds a clever, real life twist to these classic characters. This is a great choice for a small or medium family, especially one with a pet.

A two tone wig, red gloves, and a spotted faux fur coat make Cruella instantly recognizable. A flat cap and net create a simple dog catcher look, and Dalmatian onesies are inexpensive and easy to find.

11. Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf

Mom dresses as Red Riding Hood in a red cape with a basket, dad becomes the Big Bad Wolf with gray ears, face paint, and claws, and the baby plays Grandma, with a gray wig, glasses, cardigan, and toy walker.

A baby dressed as an elderly grandma pushing a tiny walker is an unexpected, funny twist on a classic story. This works best for a family of three, though a woodsman or second wolf fits right in for more people.

A red cape and basket cover Red Riding Hood easily. Gray face paint, ears, and a flannel shirt make a simple wolf costume, and a gray wig with a cardigan completes the grandma look.

12. Jurassic Park Family

Parents wear matching t-shirts with the Jurassic Park movie logo. The kids dress as dinosaurs and ride in a wagon labeled with a DANGER, HIGH VOLTAGE, ELECTRIFIED FENCE sign, just like the one from the film.

Add a Baby Dino Hatching sonogram sign for a fun pregnancy reveal twist. This is a great choice for a growing family, since each new baby can join as another hatching dinosaur.

Matching Jurassic Park tees are easy to find online or make with iron on prints. Dinosaur costumes are inexpensive, and the wagon just needs a printed warning sign taped on.

13. Darla, the Dentist, and Baby Nemo

Dad plays the dentist in green scrubs and a surgical mask, holding a toy drill up to mom’s mouth. Mom becomes Darla, the dentist’s niece from Finding Nemo, with an orange pigtail wig, plaid skirt, and a fishing line brace, and she holds a bag with a fish inside. The baby rounds out the group as Nemo, in an orange and white clownfish costume.

This one recreates the waiting room scene from the movie, braces and all, right down to Darla shaking the bag before Nemo makes his escape. It works best for a family of three, since the joke depends on these exact roles.

Scrubs and a mask cover dad’s look cheaply. The wig, skirt, and toy drill complete Darla’s costume, and a clownfish onesie finishes off Nemo. Since the reference is pretty specific, a quick mention of the scene might help it land.

Food and Brand Costumes

These costumes turn your family into instantly recognizable food and brand favorites.

14. Gatorade Family

Each family member wears a different colored outfit to represent a Gatorade flavor, with a G logo taped to the front, orange beanies tying the group together, and everyone holding a matching bottle.

Turning the whole family into a lineup of drink flavors is an instantly recognizable group gag that gets funnier with more people. It’s one of the best picks for a large family, and it scales down easily too.

Solid color leggings or sweatsuits plus a printed paper G logo are really all you need. There’s no sewing involved, making this one of the cheapest group costumes to pull off.

15. S’mores Family (Hershey’s)

One family member wears a Hershey’s chocolate bar costume with the logo on a large cardboard wrapper, paired with a white marshmallow costume, together forming a s’mores treat.

The oversized candy bar wrapper is a fun, exaggerated visual, and having the family assemble into a s’more is a clever group costume idea. This works well for a family of four, with each person as a different ingredient.

Cardboard wrappers can be hand painted or covered with a printed label. The marshmallow costume comes from a poofy white top or stuffed felt fabric, so there’s no need to buy a store bought suit.

16. Pizza Lovers

Parents wear matching Pizza is Life t-shirts and red and white trucker hats while holding pizza boxes, and the toddler dresses as a pepperoni pizza slice.

This simple food pun costume works because the parents are self proclaimed pizza fans while their kid literally is the pizza. It’s great for a small or medium family, with room to add other slices or toppings.

A plain t-shirt with iron on lettering and a cheap trucker hat make the parent costumes. The pizza slice can be a felt or foam wedge shaped tunic, easy to DIY without sewing.

17. Hot Dog and Condiment Twins

Dad wears a full hot dog costume, and twin toddlers dress as bottles of ketchup and mustard, each labeled with a fun name and wearing a matching colored tutu.

Dad becomes the hot dog held between his two condiment daughters, a clever pun that plays on the twins being a matching pair in different flavors. It’s perfect for a family with twins, and a third condiment or bun costume works for more people.

The hot dog costume can be bought or DIY’d from a stuffed tan bodysuit with grill mark fabric paint. The condiment bodysuits are just onesies with a printed label and a matching tutu.

18. UPS Driver and Amazon Packages

Dad dresses as a UPS delivery driver, while mom and the kids become Amazon Prime shipping boxes, complete with the smile logo and packing tape.

This one pokes fun at how many packages families receive, with the kids literally becoming the delivery. It’s a very flexible costume for any size group, since you just add more boxes for more kids.

A brown polo shirt and cap create the UPS look cheaply. Boxes just need arm and head holes cut out, plus some tape and a printed logo.

Funny and Punny Costumes

These costumes are all about the joke, no license required, just a good laugh.

19. Construction Crew and Bump Ahead

Dress both parents as construction workers in orange safety vests and hard hats. Give the pregnant mom a BUMP AHEAD road sign to hold next to her belly, and put a toddler in a cardboard bulldozer.

The sign turns a normal road warning into a pregnancy announcement, which is what makes this one so funny. It’s best for a small or medium family expecting a new baby, and it’s easy to add more kids as cones, road signs, or other vehicles.

Safety vests and hard hats are cheap at any hardware store. The sign is poster board glued to a dowel rod, and the bulldozer is just a painted cardboard box.

20. Top Gun Pilots and Missile Baby

Parents dress in the style of Top Gun with green flight suits, aviator sunglasses, and a mustache nodding to Maverick and Goose, while a baby rides in a stroller decorated with wings and a nose cone to look like a missile.

The stroller as missile is an unexpected, clever visual gag, since the baby basically becomes the payload. This is best for a small family with two adults and one baby, since the joke centers on one stroller.

Green jumpsuits or coveralls plus aviator sunglasses nail the pilot look without licensed costumes. The missile shape is just foam board or cardboard wrapped around the stroller frame.

21. Bank Robbers and Money Bag Baby

Parents wear a classic bank robber look with striped shirts, black beanies, and eye masks, while the baby peeks out of a canvas money bag printed with a dollar sign, surrounded by fake cash.

The baby hiding inside the money sack looks like part of the stolen loot, a cute, simple sight gag that gets an easy laugh. This is best for a small family with one baby, though older kids can join with their own masks or striped shirts.

Striped shirts and beanies are easy thrift store finds. A plain canvas tote with a dollar sign works as the money bag, stuffed with fake cash props from a party store.

22. Alien Family and Cow Baby

Mom wears a blue wig, green alien sunglasses, and an antenna headband, dad wears a green full face alien mask and black hoodie, and the baby dresses as a cow.

The random pairing of alien abductors with a barnyard cow baby is an absurd, funny contrast, like a classic cow abduction joke brought to life. This works for a small family, with room to add more aliens or barnyard kids.

A colorful wig, novelty sunglasses, and an antenna headband make an easy alien look. A rubber or fabric mask covers dad’s face, and a cow onesie with felt spots is simple for the baby.

23. Vintage Clown Family

All three family members wear classic patchwork or plaid clown outfits, clown makeup with painted eyebrows, a red nose, and rosy cheeks, along with one pointed clown hat.

The vintage, slightly eerie clown look instead of a bright cartoonish clown gives this a fun retro spooky feel. It’s flexible for any family size, with room to add more people in different patchwork colors.

Thrifted plaid or patterned button up shirts create the patchwork look without sewing. Face paint with black triangle eyebrows and a red nose recreates the look cheaply, and a fabric cone hat can be made from cardboard and felt.

Final Thoughts

Group costumes like these are honestly some of my favorite projects to help families put together. They don’t need to be expensive or complicated. The best family Halloween costumes usually come from one good idea that makes your whole crew laugh.

Pick the one that fits your family best, start gathering pieces early, and you’ll end up with a costume everyone remembers for years to come.

Not everyone in the family needs to match the group theme. If some of your crew wants to break off and go a different direction, I’ve got you covered there too.
