Halloween in college is one of my favorite times of year to help people plan a costume. You want something fun, something that photographs well, and something you’re not going to be uncomfortable in by midnight.
I put together this list of college halloween costume ideas to cover a little bit of everything. There’s nostalgic movie characters, video game icons, horror favorites, celebrity looks, and even a few costumes based on your favorite snacks and drinks.
Most of these use pieces you can thrift or already own, so you’re not stuck starting from scratch.
Movie & TV Character Costumes
1. Lola Bunny (Space Jam)
I love this costume for anyone who wants something nostalgic but still easy to move around in. Pair bunny ears with a Tune Squad-style jersey and matching shorts for an instant throwback look.
Thrift a basketball jersey or make your own with fabric paint or iron-on letters. Add the bunny ears headband and some knee-high sport socks to finish it off.
This one’s great if you know you’ll be dancing all night. It’s comfortable, it’s recognizable, and it doesn’t take much effort to put together.
2. Clark Kent / Superman
This is such a fun one because of the reveal. You start off looking like Clark Kent, then show the Superman logo underneath.
Thrift a plain white button-down and a black tie. Grab a cheap Superman crop top, or draw the logo onto a blue tank top with fabric paint, then add some nerdy glasses.
It’s simple, it’s instantly recognizable, and the reveal always gets a reaction at parties.
3. Tinker Bell
I love how photogenic this costume is. A green mini dress paired with light-up fairy wings gives you that classic Tinker Bell look without much effort.
Any green slip dress works as your base. Buy a pair of affordable fairy wings online, then add a high bun and some gold jewelry.
It’s simple, pretty, and easy to recognize the second you walk in the door.
4. Hogwarts Student (Harry Potter)
Harry Potter costumes are always a hit, especially if you’re going as a group. Everyone can wear their own house colors and still look like they belong together.
Use a plain white top and a black skirt as your base. Buy a house tie or make one out of ribbon, and a painted dowel or chopstick works as a wand.
I love this one for group costumes since it’s simple enough that everyone can make it their own.
5. Cher Horowitz (Clueless)
This 90s look never really goes out of style. A yellow plaid two-piece suit is instantly recognizable as Cher from Clueless.
Thrift a plaid blazer and a matching skirt or pants. Add a fluffy pom-pom pen or a feather boa pen as your prop.
The best part is you can wear the set again after Halloween since it doesn’t read as costume-y on its own.
6. Indiana Jones-Inspired Explorer
This one has such an easy silhouette to recognize. A fedora hat and a tied white shirt give you that classic explorer look right away.
Thrift a brown fedora and a white button-down, then tie the shirt at your waist. Pair it with a mini skirt and boots.
It’s comfortable enough for a full night out and doesn’t require any props you can’t find secondhand.
7. Jessie (Toy Story)
I love this one for anyone who grew up on Toy Story. A cow-print top with denim shorts and a red bandana gives you that cowgirl look right away.
Use a cow-print bralette or top with denim shorts. Add a red bandana, braid your hair into pigtails, and throw on a denim jacket to stay warm for the night.
This pairs really well with friends dressed as Woody or Buzz if you’re doing a group costume.
8. Willy Wonka
This is such a fun, quirky pick if you want something different from the usual character costumes. A top hat and white sunglasses do most of the work here.
Thrift a corduroy or velvet blazer as your base. Add the top hat, quirky white sunglasses, and black gloves to finish the eccentric look.
I like recommending this one because it’s gender-flexible and works with pieces you can find secondhand pretty easily.
9. Violet Beauregarde (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory)
This is a fun, recognizable moment from the movie. Any blue top and bottoms work as your base once you add blue face and body makeup.
Use pieces you already own for the outfit itself. Add a blonde wig to complete the classic Violet look.
This one’s great if you’re going with friends dressed as other Wonka characters.
10. Cruella de Vil
I love how dramatic this costume looks with very little effort. A black dress and a spotted faux fur jacket give you that iconic villain look instantly.
Thrift a black dress and a cow or dalmatian-print faux fur coat. Add a pearl necklace, red opera gloves, and a cigarette holder made from a chopstick.
It’s glam, it’s dramatic, and people will recognize it the second you walk in.
11. Velma (Scooby-Doo)
This costume is so easy to recognize, especially if you’re going as a group with the rest of the Scooby gang. An orange sweater and red skirt are really all you need.
Thrift an orange sweater and pair it with a red skirt. Add round glasses, orange tights, and a flashlight prop.
I love this one because it’s comfortable and simple, but everyone still knows exactly who you are.
12. Princess Mia (The Princess Diaries)
I love this one for anyone who grew up watching The Princess Diaries. A white corset dress with a rhinestone tiara captures that classic “princess makeover” moment from the movie perfectly.
Use a white corset top with a mini skirt as your base. Add the tiara, white gloves, and sunglasses to get that same royal transformation look Mia has by the end of the film.
It’s such a nostalgic, glam pick, and it photographs really well if you’re going for that early-2000s princess vibe.
Video Game Costumes
13. Princess Peach
This is one of the most requested costumes I hear about every year. A pink puffball dress with a gold crown gives you an instantly recognizable look.
Find a pink party dress, or make a puffy skirt with tulle if you want to DIY it. Add a cheap gold crown and white gloves.
It’s girly, it’s fun, and it works so well as a group costume with friends.
14. Lara Croft (Tomb Raider)
This is a great pick if you want to feel like an action hero for the night. A black tank top and shorts are the base, with thigh holsters adding the detail.
Use a black tank and shorts you already own. Make thigh holsters from black straps or belts, then add toy guns and some smudged makeup.
It’s comfortable, easy to move in, and makes for really confident group photos.
Superhero & Villain Costumes
15. Batgirl
This is such a good option if your friends are doing a Batman group costume. A black corset with a bat logo gives you the superhero look instantly.
Use a black corset or bustier top as your base. Add a cheap cape, an eye mask with ears, and iron on a bat logo.
I like recommending this one because it’s simple, all black, and easy to put together fast.
16. Harley Quinn
I love how bold this costume is. A distressed “Daddy’s Lil Monster” tee with pigtails dyed pink and blue gives you that Harley look right away.
Cut up an old tee and add temporary hair chalk for the pigtails. Sequin shorts are easy to find online, and a wooden dowel painted like a bat finishes the prop.
This one photographs so well and is easy to dance around in all night.
Horror & Spooky Costumes
17. The Bride (Kill Bill)
This is such a dramatic, recognizable costume if you love a good movie reference. A yellow and black tracksuit jumpsuit is the whole look here.
Find a yellow tracksuit secondhand and add black panels with fabric tape. Use fake blood and a scratch makeup kit to finish it off.
The makeup really is what sells this one, so don’t skip that part.
18. Maxine (X)
This is a great pick if your friends are into horror movies. Denim overalls and a red bandana give you that innocent farm-girl look before the twist.
Use denim overalls with a red bandana headband. Make a foam or cardboard axe and add fake blood for the horror-movie touch.
I love the contrast here between the sweet outfit and the slasher prop. It’s such a fun one for a scary movie themed party.
19. Freddy Krueger
This one is different from most of the cute costumes on this list, and that’s exactly why I like it. A red and black striped sweater is instantly recognizable.
Thrift a red and black striped sweater and add a brown fedora. Make the claw glove with cardboard or foam knives glued onto a glove.
It’s edgy, it’s easy to put together, and it stands out at any Halloween party.
20. Vampire
This one’s a Halloween staple for a reason. A black corset dress with a red-lined cape gives you that classic vampire look.
Use a black lace corset dress you already own. Add an affordable red and black cape along with fake blood and pale makeup.
I love this one because it’s simple to assemble with things you probably already have on hand.
21. Sugar Skull
This costume is all about the makeup, and it’s such a striking look when it’s done well. A black corset with lace gloves is all you need for the outfit.
Use a black corset top and skirt as your base. Watch a simple sugar skull makeup tutorial, then add lace gloves and a heart necklace.
This is a great pick if you love doing makeup and want that to be the star of your costume.
Celebrity-Inspired Costumes
22. Sabrina Carpenter
This is such an on-trend costume right now. A pink and white lace babydoll dress captures Sabrina Carpenter’s stage look really well.
A lace slip or babydoll nightgown works perfectly as the outfit. Wrap a dollar-store microphone in rhinestone stickers and add a lip-kiss temporary tattoo for extra flair.
I love this one because the prop is so easy to carry around at parties all night.
23. Hannah Montana
This is such a nostalgic pick if you grew up watching Disney Channel. A white graphic tee with a purple sequin fringe skirt gives you that concert-ready look.
Find or make a Hannah Montana graphic tee and pair it with any purple sequin or fringe skirt. Add fishnet gloves and purple-tinted sunglasses.
This pairs so well with friends dressed as other 2000s Disney Channel characters.
Glam Girl Costumes
24. Victoria’s Secret Angel
I love this one for anyone who wants to feel glam without much effort. A white or pink satin robe with feather wings is the whole costume.
Use a satin robe or slip set from your closet. Buy feather wings online and keep your hair full and wavy with soft glam makeup.
It’s comfortable, it photographs beautifully, and the wings really do all the work.
25. Miss Universe
This one is glamorous and a little funny at the same time, which I really love. A pink satin slip dress with a tiara and sash gets the point across instantly.
Use a satin slip dress you already own. Make a sash from ribbon with printed or iron-on letters, then add a cheap rhinestone tiara and a flower bouquet.
This is such a good group costume idea since everyone can wear a different sash.
26. Queen of Hearts
I love how clever this concept is. A playing card corset top with a red sequin skirt makes for such an eye-catching look.
Glue printed playing cards onto a plain corset top. Pair it with a red sequin skirt and make the crown out of cardstock.
This one always stands out because it’s so different from the typical costumes people see every year.
27. Treasure Queen
This is such a shiny, unique costume if you want something people haven’t seen before. A yellow corset dress covered in gold coins is the centerpiece.
Hot glue plastic gold coins onto a plain corset top. Add gold tinsel fringe to a skirt and pair it with a costume crown.
I love recommending this one because it’s such a fun conversation piece at parties.
28. Cupid
This is a cute, simple pick if you’re going for a love or gods and goddesses themed party. A red slip top with a heart antenna headband gets the idea across right away.
Use a red cami and skirt as your base. Buy a heart-shaped antenna headband and small wings online, then make the bow from foam board with a felt heart arrow tip.
It’s comfortable and simple, which makes it an easy one to throw together last minute.
Food & Drink Costumes
29. Diet Coke Can
This is such a fun, simple branding costume. A silver tube top with the Diet Coke logo and a sequin mini skirt gets the reference across instantly.
Use a silver metallic tube top and add the logo with red fabric paint or iron-on letters. Pair it with any sequin or silver skirt.
This is a great group costume idea if you pair it with friends dressed as other sodas.
30. Chipotle Burrito
I love how funny this one is. A silver wrap-style dress mimics foil wrapping, and a Chipotle logo sticker or patch finishes the joke.
Use a silver metallic slip or wrap dress as your base. Print and iron on a Chipotle logo cutout, then carry a matching drink cup as a bonus prop.
This works so well for a group “fast food” theme with friends.
31. Corona Beer Bottle
This one has such a fun beach and tropical feel to it. A yellow dress with a white pom-pom “foam” top gives you the bottle look right away.
Use a yellow satin or slip dress as your base. Make the foam top with white pom-poms glued to a strapless bralette, then DIY a bottle cap headpiece from a painted foam disc.
I love pairing this one with friends dressed as other drinks for an easy group costume.
Classic Costumes
32. Statue of Liberty
This is such a classic pick that never really goes out of style. A teal sequin dress with a spiked crown and torch prop gets you recognized instantly.
Any green or teal bodycon dress works as your base. Make the spiked crown from cardstock or foam sprayed gold, then DIY the torch with a foam ice cream cone shape wrapped in gold paper on a cardboard tube.
This pairs really well with a group costume alongside Uncle Sam or other landmark-themed looks.
33. Secret Agent (Men in Black style)
This is such a sleek, simple costume idea, especially for a group. A black suit with sunglasses is really all you need to pull it off.
Thrift a black blazer and trousers, then pair them with a white shirt and a skinny tie. Make a badge out of cardstock and grab a toy gun to finish the look.
I love this one because the pieces are reusable long after Halloween is over.
34. Pirate
This is such a timeless costume theme, and it’s easy to make your own. A white blouse with a black underbust corset gives you that classic pirate silhouette.
Use a white off-shoulder blouse with a black corset belt. Tie a scarf as your sash and buy an affordable tricorn hat online.
This one’s great for a group costume, and the dramatic accessories really make it stand out.
